In august 2006, the Norwegian students Jørn Wichne Pedersen, Øyvind Nystad Handberg and Andreas Doppelmayr sat in a cafeteria at the University in Oslo and dreamed about riding the world lengthwise on bicycles. Three years later, with university-degrees, the men set off from the North Cape. After 25,000 kilometers and more than one year on the road, they hope to reach Cape Agulhas, South Africa.
Their main goal is to raise NOK 500.000 for UNICEF. By selling self-designed T-shirts and receiving funds from various donors they support the project “Schools in Africa”.
So far they have travelled through eight European countries and, after spending and enjoying two weeks in Syria, they are ready to head south. While camping along the Homs-Damascus highway the men got to experience Syrian hospitality – they never actually had to put up their tent as they were constantly invited into local people’s houses. After large amounts of tea, Turkish coffee, sweets and tastes of the local cuisine, they finally reached Damascus. In the World’s oldest capital the bikers got some well-deserved rest, but also fame as stars at the poetry night at Fardous Tower Hotel.
